Yes — that statement is essentially true, and it's a common misconception.
When you lose body fat, your body oxidizes fat for energy. The atoms in stored fat are mainly converted into:
- CO₂ → exhaled through your lungs
- H₂O → leaves through urine, sweat, breath, etc.
For example, if you metabolize 10 kg of body fat, roughly 8.4 kg ends up as CO₂ that you breathe out, while about 1.6 kg becomes water that can leave through urine, sweat, and other routes.
So you do pee out some of the mass, but most of the actual mass of the fat is ultimately exhaled as carbon dioxide.
The important distinction is that breathing more doesn't make you lose more fat. You need to actually metabolize the fat by creating an energy deficit. Your body then uses stored fat, and the resulting carbon is released as CO₂.
So the simplified chain is:
Stored body fat → energy + CO₂ (mostly through lungs) + H₂O (urine/sweat/breath)
Pretty cool, right? Your lungs are actually the largest exit route for the mass of lost body fat.
