is it better to freeze or just keep in a cool place?

vendor just announced the freezing of dry powder should be avoided… when i first started researching reta most people recommended keeping dry powder in the freezer so it’s been there for around 2 months now. should i move the dry powder to just a cool dark place or would it have already degraded? if someone could offer advice on this it would be greatly appreciated
 
Curious on what the reason given was. This is contrary to everything I’ve seen. As a blanket statement this seems incorrect. What did they say specifically?

Peter magic from janoshik has an interview on YouTube that says this is the best method to avoid any sort of degradation and in the freezer it could last “decades”
 
When you read the datasheets from “official” suppliers for labs (i.e., not the grey market), they specify a year at 4°C (refrigerator) or two years at -20°C (freezer).

There is an issue with the excipient mannitol, as highlighted by research published in the fall of 2025. It tends to crystallize during freeze-drying cycles and degrade peptides the size of our aGLP1s. The solution that is starting to be deployed is the addition of trehalose to the excipient. Several of us have asked our vendors about this, but have received no response (see other forum threads). You would be the first to receive this information from your vendor. But we won’t ask you to share the vendor’s name, as naming a source could lead to your account being banned.

I'd ask why they're recommending not to freeze it. If it hasn't been reconstituted it should be fine to freeze unless they can tell you a specific reason why not and if they won't tell you a reason I'd start looking for a new vendor

Storage Guide for peptide vials

1. Unmixed dry powder: Cool & dark place acceptable short-term, refrigerate for long storage, DO NOT freeze.

2. Reconstituted liquid peptide: MUST keep refrigerated. Freezing destroys structure & causes insolubility.

All lyophilized powder products only need cold storage 2–8℃, DO NOT freeze

Once frozen, the peptide structure will be damaged,

which will cause insoluble, cloudy liquid & invalid effect.

Thank you, I wasn't aware about trehalose preventing pep degradation so that's pretty interesting! I was just shocked because the vendor is (pretty well known?) and it was my first time hearing contradicting advice regarding storage.
 
Few thoughts.

1. The cynic in me says they don't want you freezing so you have to buy more often

2. I freeze my peps in insulated containers and never had an issue. Use insulated containers to avoid temperature fluctuations that can occur in frost free freezers. It's the fluctuation that can damage the peptides. Vendor could be trying to avoid that and people coming back arguing that something was wrong with the product.

3. I let my peps warm to room temp before recon of frozen. I've heard people have no issues reconning straight from frozen but just feel the possibility is higher in this case and vendor could be trying to avoid that as well.

If you drop the vial that damages the peptides and diminished efficacy is your fault.

If you let the BAC jet in, that damages the peptide and diminished efficacy is your fault.

If it gels, your BAC, your fault.

If you swirl too hard while reconstituting diminished efficacy is your fault.

If your fridge incidentally has a cold spot that gets below freezing, or you put them in the freezer, diminished efficacy is your fault.

It’s another easy out for degradation/efficacy/excuse for low quality peptides.

I’ve never understood why people freeze their stash. Maybe if you have decades worth? And if so… why? New shit will come out.

Science is constantly evolving. Certain affirmations are considered true until someone conducts an experiment that disproves what was previously considered fact.

Look at what happened with cigarettes, handwashing for doctors moving from one patient to another, cocaine being sold over the counter more than a century ago, radium being prescribed by doctors, the claim that we use less than 10% of our brain, and all the other less sensational claims ultimately proven to be false.
