She Used Weight-Loss Drugs From a Telehealth Company, Then a GLP-1 Overdose Sent Her to the ER

There’s been a 1,500% increase in poison control calls related to the overdose or side effects of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. A woman describes a GLP-1 overdose that left her hospitalized.

Woman unhappy with her results, injects 5x the dose. Ends up in hospital for 3 days.

Supposedly the telehealth doctor told her to.

They are lucky because of how forgiving this medication actually is. Just look at reddit, most people buying first and then getting informed later. Frustrating.

I could be wrong but I sincerely doubt the doctor gave her overdose instructions. The number of posts and comments on Reddit and other forms of social media where people dont understand units vs dose or how much they are taking or if they are taking anything at all is way too common. Several people on Reddit admitted to injecting air without realizing it. Also, people overdose all kinds of self administered medications every day.

I few months back, someone OD'd on reddit. The OP called it an "allergy". She actually thought she was just allergic.

She showed a pic of her script. The Dr. had prescribed her almost 15mg a week. She was a new user and had no clue.

So, yes, the Dr absolutely could have prescribed her too much.

My best guess is that it seems to be common to report you have been previously using GLP's when first signing up to get the max dose prescribed (even though you have not ever used it) The patients then don't consider this when calculating dose, and just go by the Dr's prescription (which was based on the patient lying).

Oh, I believe it can happen. I have seen it. I just doubt it did here because they skipped over specific dose details choosing to focus on units and did not provide proof. I am skeptical of anyone referring to their dose only as units without clarification. At the end of the day its just more likely to be user error than prescribed error.

While I agree, I just wanted to point out that I have seen overdoses from the prescriber end numerous times, as well.

I love how all the captions on the pictures have to point out that she's losing weight now by diet and exercise. 🙄

Yeah, so is everyone else.

22,000 cases in 6 years when 11% of the adult population is on GLP1s isn’t so bad. Would wager a good amount is because a lot of people are bad at math. And while improper prescriptions and dosing instructions may occur and should be promptly addressed… check this statistic:

“About 29 million Americans use over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to treat pain. Every year in the United States, NSAID use is attributed to approximately 100,000 hospitalizations and 17,000 deaths.”

I cringe every time I read the classic “how many units of (insert peptide) should I take each day?” 🤦‍♂️
